Did a quick ranking of how I think it'll end up
Alexia Putellas (Barcelona, Spain),
Fran Kirby (Chelsea, England)
Lieke Martens (Barcelona, Netherlands)
Jennifer Hermoso (Barcelona, Spain)
Sam Kerr (Chelsea, Australia)
Irene Paredes (Barcelona, Spain)
Magdalena Eriksson (Chelsea, Sweden)
Jessie Fleming (Chelsea, Canada)
Wendie Renard (Lyon, France),
Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal, Netherlands),
Ashley Lawrence (PSG, Canada),
Pernille Harder (Chelsea, Denmark)
Christine Sinclair (Portland Thorns, Canada),
Christiane Endler (Lyon, Chile),
Samantha Mewis (North Carolina Courage, USA)
Sandra Panos (Barcelona, Spain)
Marie-Antoinette Katoto (PSG, France)
Stina Blackstenius (Hacken, Sweden)
Kadidiatou Diani (PSG, France)
Ellen White (Man City, England)
Only certain about first and last place though.
JFlem could be anywhere from 6-14 depending on how highly they rank her penalties. If she'd started 1/3-1/2 of club games they could make an argument for top 3.
Mewis is their token american so she might rate higher.
Fran might be higher than Sam because she contributes more overall and Sam keeps missing with these 1-on-1's.
Renard is 'Legacy player' - didn't win anything but there's nothing she can be faulted on
Magda might place higher than Irene because of the Olympics
Think Ashley Lawrence doesn't really have the 'star player' label for club & country so she might struggle for top 10
It's mostly a hype thing so I can't really see them putting a defender in the top 5 this year because nobody is getting that Lucy Bronze type Hype
Thanks for taking the time to do this! You might end up getting a few right, who knows. Tbh I'd probably rank them way different (except for number 1) but you made good points and I really think it'd be so hard to predict anything correctly

FYI: 8 reasons why CR7 is the GOAT, therefore better than Messi. - CR7 is a better overall goals scorer. Better goals per game ratio than Messi. - CR7 is a better free- kick scorer. - Messi never prove himself outside Barca. CR7 makes his team better. Messi always rely on Xavi and Iniesta. - Messi constantly dissapears with Argentina when his team need him. - Messi usually dissapears in relevant Champion' matches. - CR7 is a better header scorer. (To be continue)
(part 2:) - CR7 is a player with more goals and assists in the history of CL, he is more decisive in this competition. - CR7 is more decisive with his national team. In WC 2010 Messi score 0 goal even North Korea score more than him. In WC 2014 only scored in a group stage. Don’t mention Copa America, he just scored 1 goals and next year missed penalty. All the greatest players of all times have won with their national team. But Messi won’t. I hope this informations will get in your head. Keep crying.
Tumblr media
I’ve avoided getting involved in this “debate” over the last few years or so, but since you took so much effort in trying to convince me of something that isn’t even an argument to me, I have some time & I’m more than happy pay you the same courtesy in explaining to you with facts why this is so. Let’s do it by looking at each of the points you’ve included this so-called “information” I’m supposed to “get in my head”:
► “CR7 is a better overall goals scorer. Better goals per game ratio than Messi.”
False.
All-time, club and country?
CR: 595 goals/852 matches = 0.70 goal ratio
Messi: 562 goals/698 matches = 0.81 goal ratio
All-time, just club?
CR: 524 goals/714 matches = 0.73 goal ratio
Messi: 504 goals/581 matches = 0.87 goal ratio
All-time, just country?
CR:  71 goals / 138 matches = 0.51 goal ratio
Messi: 58 goals / 117 matches = 0.50 goal ratio
CR’s ratio is 0.01 higher and he has had 21 more international matches played than Messi. Alright. Collectively though, that 0.01 doesn’t make him “better overall”.
Conversion rates since 2009:
CR’s conversion rate total/outside the box: 15% / 5%
Messi’s conversion rate total/outside the box: 21% / 9%
What about when they’ve been at their very best, goalscoring-wise? Most goals scored in a calendar year:
CR: 69 goals (ratio: 1.17)
Messi: 91 goals (ratio: 1.32)
Not only is Messi better in terms of quantity of goals, he is also a better goalscorer when context is considered. How do they perform under pressure/when the team needs them the most? From 2016:
CR conversion rate when team is winning / when team is losing or drawing: 25% / 6%
Messi conversion rate when team is winning / when team is losing or drawing: 22% / 20%
Here’s an infographic (although it’s only updated up to 2015) to help better illustrate the importance of context & goalscoring when it comes to Messi and Cristiano:
Tumblr media
(credit to Grup 14 and Sarah)
Goals after 1 dribble/2 dribbles/3 dribbles/4 dribbles:
CR: 45 goals/10 goals/2 goals/0 goals
Messi: 115 goals/40 goals/15 goals/4 goals
Pre-assisted goals:
CR: 13 goals
Messi: 90 goals
► “CR7 is a better free-kick scorer.”
Not quite.
Since Messi and Ronaldo have been playing together in Spain (2009-10 season):
CR has scored 20 goals in 291 attempts. This creates a conversion rate 6.87%.
Messi scored 17 free-kick goals with 212 attempts, creating a conversion rate of 8.02%.
Since 2012:
CR has scored 17; conversion rate = 7%,
Messi has scored 23; conversion rate = 10.5%
Even more recent, just for fun:
Messi has scored 3 free-kicks in 2017 alone
CR has converted only 3 since 2015.
What about in big matches?
Total free-kick goals in El Clasico:
Messi = 2
CR = 0
Messi’s total free-kick goals in World Cup and Copa America matches: 2
CA = 1 (vs. Panama)
WC = 1 (vs. Nigeria)
CR’s total free-kick goals in World Cup & Euro matches: 0.
With 43 attempts. On average, he has had a shot from a direct free-kick every 67 minutes he has been on the pitch (with a total of 2,884 minutes at major international tournaments) and has a ZERO PERCENT conversion rate.
► “Messi never proved himself outside Barca.”
The old “but can he do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke?” argument is easy to lean on because he hasn’t, but it doesn’t change that it’s an extremely flawed argument. Let’s look at why - specifically England, where CR has proved himself outside of Spain since we’re doing a head-to-head comparison.
Lionel Messi has scored more Champions League goals against English clubs than he has against sides from any other nation.
On the 25 occasions that he has lined up against English teams, Messi has scored a total of 16 goals.
Arsenal - 9 goals in 6 matches.
Manchester City - 5 goals in 5 matches.
Manchester United - 2 goals (which helped Barcelona claim Champions League victories in Rome in 2009 and at Wembley Stadium in 2011
Never mind him having big performances against Bayern/Leverkusen, PSG/Lyon, AC Milan/Roma, Celtic/Rangers and etc. So, something tells me the kid from Rosario - who also played very well through the rough conditions he experienced there - CAN do it on cold, rainy night in Stoke. If you think he cannot simply because he hasn’t, that’s up to you. You’re entitled to your opinion. But the stats tell us another story.
► “CR7 makes his team better.”
Sure he does, he is one of football’s greatest. But Messi makes his even better.
Messi’s total major club trophies: 29 TOTAL (including 2 trebles, one of those years winning the sextuple)
8 League championships
4 Champions Leagues
4 Copas del Rey
3 UEFA Supercups
3 Club World Cups
7 Supercopas de España
CR total major club trophies (RM+Manchester United): 16 TOTAL
4 League championships
2 Copas del Rey
2 Champions Leagues
1 Supercopa de España
1 FA Cup
1 EFL Cup
1 Community Shield
3 Club World Cups
1 Super Cup
Stats since 2009, when Messi and CR started playing together in the same league:
CR + RM: 9 major Trophies
+ 1 Liga
+ 2 Copas del Rey
+ 2 Champions Leagues
+ 1 Supercopa de España
+ 2 Club World Cups
+ 1 Super Cup
Messi + Barça: 20 major trophies
+ 5 Ligas
+ 3 Copas del Rey
+ 2 Champions Leagues
+ 5 Supercopas de España
+ 3 Club World Cups
+ 2 UEFA Super Cups
All-time assists, club and country:
CR: 195, in 852 matches
Messi: 230, in 698 matches
► “Messi always relies on Xavi and Iniesta.”
Another archaic myth that Messi has destroyed year after year. Crazy that people are still hanging on to this, even after Xavi has been gone for two years now and Iniesta has been on/off form while dealing with playing in/out of position. Meanwhile, Messi has continued to improve and remain the greatest.
This myth seemingly makes sense due to Messi’s lack of titles with Argentina compared to his achievements at Barca - but again, this is a very flawed argument. Messi is the greatest player in the world and Xavi/Iniesta are two of the greatest midfielders/were one of the greatest midfield duos of this generation. Together, the three of them contributed to a Barça that won everything a club can within a short span of time. But how can we say in the same sentence that “Barça is only successful because they rely on Messi” AND “Messi is only successful because he relies on Xavi/Iniesta”? Grasping at straws like this really isn’t necessary, because the truth of the matter is that they simply formed a brilliant partnership together. Barcelona successfully utilized the talents of these incredible players together to succeed. Some facts to further debunk this:
During Messi’s record breaking year when he scored 91 goals, he was assisted only eight times by Iniesta and five times by Xavi.
Neither Xavi nor Iniesta have even assisted Messi the most in his career. It’s Dani Alves.
Messi continues to have the most Barcelona assists himself since 2003/2004. At Barcelona, he has more assists alone than Iniesta and Xavi combined in their club careers.
But maybe assists alone cannot determine the impact Xavi or Iniesta has on Messi. Alright, what about pre-assisted goals (goals pre-assisted by the scorer)?
As we said before, as of 2016, 90 of Messi’s goals were pre-assisted. This means that in ~23% of his goals, he started the play with key passes that ended up back with him scoring.
While CR, surrounded by Modric, Kroos, Ozil, Di Maria, etc. (I’m not sure why people like to act like he hasn’t been surrounded by top players) throughout his career sits at 13 pre-assisted goals.
Not convinced? Then let’s look at Messi’s performances for Argentina, where he has no Xavi/Iniesta. You said….
► “Messi constantly disappears with Argentina when his team need him. CR7 is more decisive with his national team.”
Which is again, false. Of all the big name players that play for Argentina, you call the man who is, for his national team, the…
Top scorer in all international competitions, including friendlies
Top scorer in International friendlies
Top scorer from the penalty spot
Top scorer in all U-20 international competitions
Top scorer in FIFA World Cup qualification
Top scorer when looking at goals scored in one calendar year
Top hat-trick scorer in all international competitions, including friendlies
Top assister in all international competitions, including friendlies
Only player that have scored against all 9 South American Nations
Key contributor in terms of keeping possession, averaging 63 passes per game and converting 86.2 percent.
“disappearing”, “dependent on Xavi/Iniesta” and "indecisive”?
Argentina’s National Team Win % in 2014 and 2018 World Cup Qualification with Messi: 65%
Without Messi? 22%.
Not quite.
I would suggest reading and watching [this analysis] for a better perspective on this. There is a video there which compares how Messi plays for Argentina and how he plays for Barcelona and it reveals that there isn’t much difference between how he plays for both sides, but there is a difference in the behaviour of his teammates. The confidence that Messi receives from his teammates in Barcelona is far different from what he is offered by his teammates in Argentina. As I said before, Barcelona has been able to successfully utilize Messi’s talents/abilities and have reaped every award there is because of it - something Argentina has failed to take advantage of so far.
In regards to CR with this, a reminder:
CR goals international: 71 goals / 138 matches = 0.51 goal ratio
Messi goals: 58 goals / 117 matches = 0.50 goal ratio
A difference of 0.01, with CR playing 21 more international games.
International Assists?
CR: 23
Messi: 37 (in 21 less matches)
International Goal Participation?
CR: Every 113m + 25s
Messi: Every 99m + 12s
► “In WC 2010 Messi score 0 goal even North Korea score more than him. In WC 2014 only scored in a group stage. Don’t mention Copa America, he just scored 1 goals and next year missed penalty.”
It’s true that Messi didn’t score in WC 2010. He did get an assist (the same amount as CR in the tournament) and was named MOTM once (the same number of times as CR in the tournament). Funny you should mention North Korea though, the ONLY team Ronaldo scored against in WC 2010. Once. After Portugal was already up 6-0.
Also, I’m not sure which WC 2014 you were watching. I was watching the one where Ronaldo’s only goal in this tournament was also in the group stage (against Ghana), while Messi scored four times in the group stages, assisted Di Maria’s goal which carried them in the round of 16, and carried his team to the final.
And lol ”don’t mention Copa America”? Why? Because Leo carried his team to the final twice in two years?
In 2015:
1 goal, 2 penalties (including the ONLY one of his teammates to do so in the final)
3 assists
In 2016:
5 goals
4 assists
(If you want to compare to CR’s Euro 2016, where he scored 3 and assisted 3).
Again, carried his team to the final. But sure, summarize the tournament as a “missed penalty” to fit your narrative.
Also worth mentioning that in 2007, at age 20, he also set up the game winning goal against the US in the opening 4-1 win, scored the game-tying first goal vs Colombia in their 4-2 win, assisted their only goal against Paraguay in the beginning of the knockout stage, scored the second goal in their quarter-final victory, and another in their 3-0 semifinal win - which lead to the first of the three Copa America finals he’s played in.
► “CR7 is a better header scorer.”
Yes, a 6′1 CR is better at scoring headers than a 5′7 Messi (*pretends to be shocked*). CR just passed Aduriz for this record a few months ago actually, which isn’t surprising - Cristiano has shown he’s very good in the air. Nobody is denying that Cristiano has great qualities as a player. But as I’m sure you would agree, this argument alone, does not cement anyone as the greatest of all time. Also notable to mention that Barça as a team - tactics/style kept in mind - score less headers. Next.
► “Messi disappears in relevant Champions League matches.”
Did you even try with this one? A few examples of how wrong this is off the top of my head?

Scored four goals in the second leg, the first three in just 21 minutes

Scored twice in ten minutes in the first leg. We advanced to the final 3-1 on aggregate.

Nobody will ever forget his two goals in this extremely ‘relevant’ match, as you put it.
Was also at the heart of Neymar’s second goal in the second leg.
UCL Final at Berlin against Juventus, 2015
Messi’s pass to Alba sparked the first goal scored by Rakitic
Messi was at the heart of the counter attack which gave Barca the lead again.
He wasn’t on the scoresheet, but he made his presence felt.
It’s true that our last two Champions League tournaments were not what we hoped they would be, but in our ‘relevant’ matches then, Leo still scored 3 against Arsenal over both legs and scored a crucial penalty in our historic PSG comeback this year.
I couldn’t help but notice how you didn’t have a counter-response about CR and ‘relevant’ CL matches. Could it have to do with numbers like this, from last season?:
Tumblr media
^ (And again, credit to Sarah for this.)
And speaking of ‘relevant’ matches, why not mention ‘relevant’ league matches?
Tumblr media
Credit to Grup 14 for the graph. Messi’s line (higher than CR’s in all aspects) shows a relatively steady performance in games (goals/assists) that isn’t affected by the quality of the opposition - so he’s there (more or less) regardless of ‘relevance’ of the match. Meanwhile, as we can see, CR follows an obvious increase in performance as the quality of the opposing team decreases.
► “CR7 is a player with more goals and assists in the history of CL, he is more decisive in this competition”
CR does have an advantage when it comes to assists in this competition (37 in 145 vs. Messi’s 25 in 115) - the only competition which he surpasses Messi in assists. And I’m certainly not denying that he’s decisive in this competition. Nobody could.
But with goals:
CR: 104 goals in 145 games = 0.72 goals/game
Messi: 94 goals in 115 games = 0.82 goals/game
And ultimately, titles:
CR: 3
Messi: 4
► “All the greatest players of all times have won with their national team. But Messi won’t.”
Cruyff. Raul. Puskas. Eusebio. Zico. Maldini. Ballack. Bergkamp. Figo. Gascoigne. Laudrup. And the list goes on.
The greatness of these players, all who have never won an international title, are not questioned. A list Cristiano was also on just last year. Did you create this entire argument after the goal Eder scored, which CR watched from the bench?Did that moment make you believe it can overshadow all of the facts above?
If you want to get technical, Messi won with Argentina in 2008, when he became an olympic champion and was highlighted as one of the standout players in the tournament.
Neither CR nor Leo has lead their team to a World Cup.
But it is true that Messi hasn’t won a Copa America, despite playing in 3 finals and standing out in each one of those tournaments.
► Other:
Most Ballons d'Or (5): Messi
Most consecutive Ballons d'Or (4): Messi
Most goals in La Liga history (347): Messi
Most assists in La Liga history (137): Messi
Most goals scored in a La Liga season (50): Messi
Most goals scored in a club season (73): Messi
Most goals in El Clasico history (23): Messi
Most assists in El Clasico history (13): Messi
All I have to say is that if after going through the facts, doing some reading (some suggestions = Lionel Messi is Impossible, Beyond stats and stunts - The gulf between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo widened in 2016, Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo - Who’s the best goalscorer?, Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo - What defines a big-game player?, and the Messi vs. Ronaldo resource), some watching/listening (check out Lionel Messi - The World’s Greatest, CruijffCast - Episode 7 - Messi x Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi vs. No Space, and Lionel Messi - The 10 Smartest Skills Without Touching the Ball), and maybe just watching some of Messi’s matches that will show you the things stats can’t fully capture… if you believe that headers in a differing styles of play and one international title can justify your entire argument, then there’s no more convincing I can do. This is why I like to stay out of this debate these days. Because for me, although CR is undoubtedly one of the great players of this generation, the greatest of all time isn’t debatable.
So if you haven’t guessed it by now, there are no tears over here. If you need a tissue though, let me know!

FIFA 19 Team of the Week 43 Prediction
Goalkeeper
Steve Mandanda - GK - OVR 83 For the second back to back week, we select a Ligue 1 attendant, this time with Marseille's Mandanda after the French plug kept Marseille in the game with six spares in their 0-0 attract away to Nantes. L'Equipe remunerated his presentation with a 8/10, making him the joint most noteworthy score of the week.
 Defenders
Mats Hummels - CB - OVR 89 somewhat of an unusual one here with the apparently evident decision being Paco, who scored twice and helped another in Dortmund's 5-1 prevail upon Augsburg, in any case, Hummels was authoritatively granted MOTM and without an IF this year close by the way that he had his prominent move back to Dortmund I can see this one going in the protectors support, particularly with the about of cap deceives this week.
Martin Hinteregger - CB - OVR 77 Onto a Bundesliga CB which was increasingly expected, with Hinteregger. The Austrian scored the main objective of the match, enabling Frankfurt to leave away with every one of the three points by means of a 1-0 home win over Hoffenheim.
Lucas Digne - LB - OVR 81 Digne stood out as truly newsworthy in the Premier League last season with steady assaulting commitments and early signs have by and by been solid for him with two clean sheets and now a help to add to that from his second match of which Everton dealt with a 1-0 prevail upon Watford.
 Midfielders
Memphis Depay - LW - OVR 84 Lyon opened Ligue 1 in style, dealing with a 6-0 pounding of Angers. Three players stand an opportunity of an IF, all of which got a 8/10 from L'Equipe. On paper, I do feel that Depay is the best choice with two objectives and a help from LW in spite of the fact that could pass up a major opportunity due to having such a large number of unique things as of now.
Dani Ceballos - CAM - OVR 81 Arsenal appear as though they have a take subsequent to crediting Ceballos from Real Madrid with the Spaniard turning into a moment hit among the Arsenal fans, helping both their objectives in a 2-1 home win over Burnley, making him one of the simpler determinations this week.
Santi Cazorla - CDM - OVR 80 It was an exciting 4-4 draw when Villarreal facilitated Granada and in spite of the fact that there are no obvious alternatives from the match I can't see an eight-objective La Liga game is disregarded. Cazorla was one of just two players to get a three-star rating from Marca and hence I have decided on him.
Kevin De Bruyne - CM - OVR 91 It was an intense battle for KDB with numerous damage issues hampering his year however since he looks fit and returning to his best he is probably going to be an enormous expansion to an as of now apparently top notch City side. In spite of the fact that Spurs held them to a 2-2 draw City were overwhelming all through with KDB pulling the strings all match which brought about the Belgian grabbing two helps.
Marcel Sabitzer - RW - OVR 81 There were two in number competitors originating from Leipzig's 4-0 away win over Union Berlin with Halstenberg being the unfortunate player to pass up a major opportunity in the wake of scoring one and helping another from LWB and rather we decide on Sabitzer, of whom was associated with each of the four objectives with one for himself going nearby three different helps. A presentation which saw him guarantee Kickers POTW.
 Forwards
Zlatan Ibrahimovic - ST - OVR 85 The MLS was one of only a handful couple of associations to have two installations fall into the cut off for this side and accordingly it has worked to a great extent to support Ibra for my choice of the Swede with Ibra scoring twice in the two matches to accomplish four objectives in two matches, putting him in front of different choices I have with two objectives.
Teemu Pukki - ST - OVR 71 After what appeared to be a moderate begin against Liverpool, Norwich confronted a considerably more practical test of Newcastle. One which they made do easily, generally down to Pukki who proceeded with his goalscoring structure with a cap stunt to make it four from his opening two matches.
 Substitutes
Zack Steffen - GK - OVR 75 The substitute goalkeeper was fundamentally harder than the beginning one indeed with constrained choices introducing themselves. At last, I settled on the Kicker guardian which this week was granted to Steffen who made nine spares in a 3-1 win to commence his life in Germany.
Capa - RB - OVR 78 An early stun came in the opening seven day stretch of the new La Liga season with Bilbao recording a 1-0 prevail upon Barcelona. Aduritz scored the single objective yet I am rather deciding on Capa who helped the objective nearby helping keep the spotless sheet.
Miguel Layun - RWB - OVR 78 Layun was scorned a week ago for his objective and a perfect sheet however I have picked to incorporate him for a subsequent week pursuing he got both an objective and an aid Monterrey's 2-0 prevail upon Toluca. The position is debateable however even as a RM I feel that he stands an opportunity.
Rafa - LM - OVR 79 The first of two from Portugal I have chosen is Rafa who was associated with both Benfica's objectives during their 2-0 away win, making them one of just two groups to win both their opening apparatuses.
Mbwana Ally Samatta - ST - OVR 73 Waasland seems to be one of the more fragile sides in the Belgian Pro League this season and Genk just heaped more weight onto them with a 4-0 away win. Samatta scored three of those four objectives and in this way looks set for his SIF.
Ze Luis - ST - OVR 79 Ze Luis made the move from Russia to Portugal so as to carry out his specialty for Porto, a move which he has had a moment effect from, scoring three of their for objectives during an agreeable 4-0 succeed at home to Setubal.
Dario Tadic - ST - OVR 65 There was a striker in Austria who scored a noteworthy multiple times anyway with him not in the game in then welcomes Tadic who oversaw three objectives for Hartberg in their 3-3 draw. Despite the fact that they just oversaw one point the way that Tadic would be a gold thing works to support him.
 Reserves
Reguilon - LB - OVR 64 With just a couple non-gold cap stunts happening this week it settled on the choice of Reguilon that a lot simpler. With an objective, help and clean sheet from LB the La Liga safeguard ought to be a conviction yet observing as he is a bronze thing he winds up hard to fit in yet with it being Sevilla I anticipate that EA should wind up including him.
Chanathip Songkrasin - CAM - OVR 66 The first of two players I have anticipated from Hokkaido is Songkrasin and in spite of the fact that I don't accept that both will wind up getting in with it being the Japanese alliance I have chosen that over the long haul its value including both for a general score. Songkrasin was granted MOTM for his two objectives and two aids a truly agreeable 8-0 win.
Jay Bothroyd - ST - OVR 66 With Bothroyd being a comfortable name with English watchers after he scored a cap stunt in a 8-0 win I just couldn't overlook him, in spite of the way that he wasn't the authority MOTM. A cap stunt is constantly hard to disregard however.
Ronnie Schwartz - ST - OVR 66 A second IF which originates from a 3-3 draw now, this time from the Danish alliance with Schwartz scoring each of the three of Silkeborg's objectives in their 3-3 draw away at Sonderjysk.
Adam Taggart - ST - OVR 69 It's not frequently that you see Australian players playing abroad however Taggart chose to make the transition to Korea, playing for Suwon Bluewings. He figured out how to score a cap stunt this week during a 3-1 away win over Gangwon.

15 TO WATCH/5 SPORTS TECH/POWER OF SPORTS 5: RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS/BIZ/TECH/PHILANTHROPY ISSUES FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 15
with Jacob Aere
As the men’s Open Championship holds court in Northern Ireland, the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews (R&A) has increased the prize money for this year’s Women’s British Open by 40% to a total purse of $4.5 million. The move will see the winner of the 2019 event take home $675,000, up from the $490,000 won last year by England’s Georgia Hall. Despite the increase, which makes the tournament the second highest prize fund of the five women’s majors, the pot remains significantly lower than the $10.75 million on offer for the men, with the winner of this month’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush set to claim $1.89 million. “We recognized that more needed to be done to elevate the prize fund for this great championship and are pleased that we have been able to make a significant increase this year as part of the R&A’s commitment to women’s golf,” said Martin Slumbers, chief executive of the R&A. Next month’s Women’s British Open, which takes place at Woburn Golf Club August 1-4, will be the first under the tournament’s new five-year title sponsorship with finance and insurance firm AIG, which signed a deal in November last year to replace electronics company Ricoh.
Last week, a ticker-tape parade through Manhattan. Now, it's back to work. In the wake of the USWNT’s fourth World Cup title, boosting interest in the nine-team National Women's Soccer League, where all 23 members of the USWNT compete, is now top priority. As JohnWallStreet notes, capitalizing on the World Cup frenzy is easier said than done, especially when attendance is already a struggle. Portland averages 18,000 fans and Utah averages 11,000, but the other seven franchises average fewer than 5,000. While the NWSL still boasts the majority of the world's top players (including reigning world player of the year Marta), Europe is closing the gap. Wealthy clubs like Olympique Lyon and Barcelona have upped their investments in women's soccer, leading to a record seven European countries reaching this year's World Cup quarterfinals. If the NWSL can't keep up, the balance of power in the sport could ultimately shift — both at the club level (Americans could be lured overseas by bigger paychecks) and internationally (continued investment could threaten the USWNT's dominance). With the future of U.S. women's soccer at stake, the NWSL must seize the moment like never before.
Major soccer announcements followed the U.S. Women’s National Team winning the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. ESPN and the National Women’s Soccer League announced an agreement to carry 14 league matches that will close out the 2019 season. NWSL telecasts began July 14 on ESPNEWS, with the Orlando Pride vs. Portland Thorns. The NWSL Championship will air October 27 on ESPN2, with tickets going on sale this month. Boosting the NWSL’s cash flow: Budweiser just signed on as a major sponsor. And U.S. Soccer and Allstate locked in a multi-year partnership headlined by Allstate’s presenting sponsorship of the USWNT’s five-game Victory Tour. The tour begins August 3 when the USA hosts the Republic of Ireland at the Rose Bowl, carried on ESPN2. The next four matches of the Victory Tour will be held August 29, September 3, October 3, and October 6 at venues around the country. As part of its new sponsorship, Allstate becomes an official sponsor of the U.S. Women’s, Men’s, and Youth National Teams, as well as presenting sponsor of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and designates Allstate exclusively as the Official Insurance Sponsor of U.S. Soccer, through 2022.
87% of the top 30 advertisers that ran spots during the Women’s World Cup also did so during the Men’s World Cup last year, according to a MediaRadar study. “Looking at how top industries spent TV ad dollars on each tournament, we notice several similarities, but also some differences,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO and Co-Founder of MediaRadar. “Industries such as Retail and Media and Entertainment accounted for a similar share of the ad dollars in both tournaments, but then there were industries where the share of spend was noticeably different.” Industries that accounted for a larger share of spend during the men's tournament included Technology, Non-Alcoholic Beverages, and Beer, Wine and Spirits, while Finance & Real Estate, Apparel, Home Furnishings, and Toiletries and Cosmetics accounted for a larger share of spend during the women’s events. This is yet another sign that consumers, and their brands, view the women’s national team to be every bit as economically viable as the men’s.
DC-based educational technology leader EVERFI has partnerships with the NFL and United Way, as well as MLB, the NHL, and NBA. But it’s a recent alignment with the EPL that is taking up much of co-founder Jon Chapman's time these days. Chapman, who serves as EVERFI's head of global partnerships, last Friday spoke with SportsBusiness Daily about working with some of the premier leagues in sports, his favorite places to travel, and his family's most recent trip across the pond. "I recently got back from London after meeting with the EPL, and they’ve got a really innovative program called Primary Stars, which focuses on elementary age students. We are helping them bring that program to the U.S.,” Chapman said. “It’s a lot of fun working with this variety of leagues, and the way it came about is really just that the sports world is a small one. If you do well by one of the leagues, there’s a really strong network effect.” And as mental health issues and suicide rates climb across the U.S., EVERFI last week launched important new courses to help colleges and universities support students during transitional periods – a critical need as students return to campuses across the nation next month.
Media days are underway as college football prepares for its sesquicentennial. College football hits its 150th season this fall, and the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame highlighted celebrations taking place in the coming months to pay homage to the occasion. "The NFF has been in the vanguard of promoting the game for the past 73 years," said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatchell. "And we wanted to take a leadership role in celebrating the 150th anniversary, including providing the office space for CFB150 at our corporate headquarters; staging events at the Hall in Atlanta; and incorporating the milestone into all of our key messaging whenever possible." Media days mark the unofficial "start" of the upcoming college football season, and no conference quite matches the spectacle that is SEC Media Days. July 15-18, the Hyatt Regency in Birmingham turns into a circus as reporters and fans from all over gather to cover the conference's 14 coaches and players. Farther west, the Big 12 looks solid. This year, the conference distributed $38.8 million per school. Its current TV contract expires in 2025, and there is no chatter about it folding like the whispers heard a few years ago.
Minor League Baseball has announced its list of Top 25 teams in licensed merchandise sales for 2018, with the combined totals of all 160 teams setting a MiLB record with more than $73.8 million in retail sales. The $73.8 million total marks a 4.2% increase over 2017’s record total. The Top 25 list includes: Albuquerque Isotopes, Charleston RiverDogs, Charlotte Knights, Columbia Fireflies, Columbus Clippers, Corpus Christi Hooks, Durham Bulls, El Paso Chihuahuas, Fort Wayne TinCaps, Gwinnett Stripers, Hartford Yard Goats, Indianapolis Indians, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Nashville Sounds, Pawtucket Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Rochester Red Wings, Sacramento River Cats, Salt Lake Bees, San Antonio Missions, Tacoma Rainiers, Toledo Mud Hens, and Trenton Thunder. Rick recently spoke with Octagon Executive Vice President Woody Thompson, who leads that agency’s baseball practice. Here’s what Thompson shared: “Baseball has done a really great job. From a municipal standpoint, their engagement with these cities has been fantastic and the cities have really gotten behind it…Baseball has a place in this country in the hearts and minds of everybody. Whether you’re a kid or you’re an adult, baseball is there for you.”
After a Wimbledon for the ages, World Team Tennis, U.S. hardcourts return. Armed with new CEO Carlos Silva, two new franchises, a new TV partner, and a new streaming partner, World Team Tennis returns for its 44th season this month, with the eight-team league, which now includes the Vegas Rollers and Orlando Storm, and features 16 matches on CBS Sports channels July 14-August 3, including the league’s debut on broadcast TV July 21. While we won’t see Wimbledon champs Simona Halep and Novak Djokovic competing, this year’s WTT athletes include returning players Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens, Bob and Mike Bryan, Madison Keys, Victoria Azarenka, Monica Puig, Eugenie Bouchard, and John Isner. Elsewhere, the 2019 Citi Open in Washington, DC will see fans offered a new fan experience showcasing D.C.’s “most innovative” culinary fare. Levy will be the exclusive food and beverage partner for the long-running tennis tournament. In a delicious new twist, Levy will rebrand concessions and VIP hospitality fare throughout the tournament grounds with customized menus from Chef Jose Andres and favored local D.C. eateries.
As David Beckham took in Wimbledon action on Centre Court, his MLS Inter Miami franchise secured permission from city commissioners to build a soccer-specific stadium in Fort Lauderdale. The motion was approved for the City of Fort Lauderdale to enter into a comprehensive agreement with Beckham’s MLS project to develop the Lockhart Stadium site. Inter Miami, which will join MLS in 2020, plans to invest up to $60 million to construct a state-of-the-art, 18,000-seat stadium at the site of the now demolished Lockhart Stadium. The venue will temporarily house the MLS franchise for two seasons while the club looks to construct a permanent stadium in Miami on a 73-acre site near Melreese golf course. Lockhart site construction will begin once the FAA approves the process due to the site’s proximity to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. Meanwhile, Beckham is working with his new Studio 99 content house and LeBron James’ Uninterrupted to co-produce a documentary series charting the launch of Inter Miami. Studio 99 already has a slate of projects in development with a broad focus beyond sports.
The New York Islanders have revealed plans for a new train station as part of their $1.26 billion redevelopment project at Belmont Park. The total train station cost, which will be part of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) line, is expected to be $105 million. $97 million of that figure will be funded by redevelopment group New York Arena Partners, with the state providing the remaining $8 million. According to Newsday, the train station will be partially open by 2021, when the Islanders hope to open their new arena, and fully operational by 2023. The service is expected to alleviate concerns over a lack of public transport to the Belmont Park site, which as well as a 19,000-seat arena and entertainment complex is to feature a 250-room hotel and 435,000 square feet of retail space. The announcement of Long Island’s first new LIRR station in nearly 50 years coincided with the release of new analysis of the project’s economic impact. The study claims that the new arena, hotel, and retail village will generate nearly $50 million in new public revenue per year and produce $725 million in annual economic output.
Ever since Steve Ballmer bought the team, the Los Angeles Clippers have done their best to make an impression in a market long dominated by the Lakers. While the Lakers cratered last season, the Clippers created a blue-collar identity en route to a playoff appearance. With a net worth of $42 billion, Ballmer is the wealthiest owner in North American sports, and he's utilized that wealth to bulk up the Clippers' front office and medical staff — two areas of increasing importance in an era of load management. Off the court, the Clippers have carved out their own space in Los Angeles in hopes of attracting new fans and being viewed as much more than a little brother. Ballmer has donated more than $10 million to build 350 Clippers-branded public basketball courts throughout the city — a philanthropic effort that doubles as a way to win the hearts and minds of young L.A. residents. There are also plans for the team to move into a new, privately-financed arena in Inglewood by 2024. The L.A. basketball landscape dramatically changed last week — and if Ballmer has his way, that change could be permanent.
With the NFL and its players union in the midst of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement, owners continue to push for an 18-game regular season. According to Axios Sports, the NFLPA estimates that an additional two games could add as much as $2.5 billion in annual revenue, which would, in turn, add more than $15 million to the salary cap. Noted the Wall Street Journal, “Across the league's 32 teams, that has the potential to put nearly half a billion dollars in the hands of players annually.” The players are pushing back because of injury concerns. The additional two games would reduce the average NFL career span from 3.3 to 2.8 years, according to the NFLPA's estimates, which is significant because players don't become eligible for post-career benefits until they've played for three years. One potential solution that the owners have proposed is to play 18 games but only allow each player to play in 16 of them…which has the potential to seriously dilute the product. This debate isn't going anywhere soon, so prepare to hear a lot more about it as the NFL season gets underway.
U.S. Club Soccer estimates an $8.5 million direct economic impact from the 2019 National Premier Leagues (NPL) Finals, Elite National Premier League (ENPL) Finals, and the National Cup XVIII Finals at DICK’S Sporting Goods Park in Colorado. The 2019 NPL and ENPL Finals, which took place July 11-15, featured U-13 through U-19 boys and girls league champions from around the country, totaling more than 110 teams and 1,700 of America’s top youth players. Playing out July 19-23, the National Cup XVIII Finals serve as the culmination of U.S. Club Soccer’s cup-based national championship series, welcoming 220 teams to compete among U-13 through U-19 boys and girls brackets. As three of the most prestigious youth soccer championships in the country, the NPL Finals, ENPL Finals, and the National Cup XVIII Finals are the targeted annual destination for teams competing on the national level. The expected economic impact for the 2019 Finals is $8.5 million. Founded in 2001, U.S. Club Soccer boasts member clubs from all 50 states, fostering the growth and development of soccer clubs throughout the country to create the best possible development environment for players of all ages in every club.
Captain Morgan is toasting Major League Soccer, courtesy of a new agreement to become the league’s official spiced rum and exclusive spirits partner through 2022. The new deal names Captain Morgan as an official sponsor of MLS All-Star – taking place in a few weeks in Orlando – the Campeones Cup (August 14), and MLS Cup (November 10). Fans will soon be able to purchase custom-labeled bottles of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum featuring official team colors and crests. “From New York to Seattle to Los Angeles, everything about Major League Soccer, its intensely passionate fan base, the atmosphere at each match, and the exciting growth of the sport in the U.S. mirrors the energy that Captain Morgan stands for,” said Christina Choi, DIAGEO Senior Vice President, Rum, Gin, and Tequila. “Our goal is to reward that dedicated fan base, and the crews that get together to support their clubs each and every week, with the fun only Captain can bring.” The rum brand also becomes an official sponsor of Chicago Fire Soccer Club, D.C. United, New York City FC, Philadelphia Union, and Seattle Sounders FC.
And finally, the extra mustard on the hot dog, courtesy of Food & Wine magazine. Hot dog brand Ball Park is honoring baseball’s best hot dog vendors in a new trading card set. Baseball cards have immortalized baseball players for nearly as long as the sport has been around. These days, fans often get just as excited about the ballpark food as they do about seeing the players, so it only makes sense that the hot dog brand Ball Park is creating a new kind of trading card: hot dog vendor cards. Ball Park has put the call out for baseball fans to nominate their favorite hot dog vendors over the next few weeks for inclusion in the set, which is scheduled to go into print in late September or early October—also known as playoff season, where baseball’s biggest heroes shine. The brand claims that this will be the first time these true ballpark MVPs have ever been honored in card form.

Illegal English Premier League streaming is worth £1 million in uncaptured sponsorship media value per match. The sponsorship valuation firm GumGum Sports produced a first-of-its-kind study that showed an average audience of 7.1 million fans across as many as 149 countries over eight matches from the English Premier League’s 2018-2019 season. According to Business Wire, the pirated audience was largest in China, where illegal streams served more than 1 million fans per match. The global study also broke down its £1 million-per-match finding by on-pitch sponsor, noting that, of the seven deal placements analyzed, the majority of value came from field-side LED (rotating digital creative) and kit (front-of-jersey) sponsorship placements. The study is the first ever to incorporate digital piracy consumption into a cross-channel sponsorship measurement solution alongside traditional broadcast, streaming, social, and digital, underscoring the rapid global proliferation of illegal online streaming of televised sporting events. Rather than negating illegal streams, this study accepts the chaos of the Internet to try and benefit sports sponsors.
ESPN officially enters esports competition with EXP. EXP is ESPN’s official brand for esports competitions. According to Player. One, the competitions are to be held at ESPN’s own events and the first competition on their list is the battle royale game “Apex Legends.” The first EXP Pro-Am “Apex Legends” tournament was held alongside the 2019 ESPYS this past week, while the second event takes place at X Games Minneapolis 2019 in August. Notables who partook in the event include Nick “Nick EH 30” Amyoony, TSM’s Colton “Viss” Visser, and Coby “Dizzy” Meadows. The competition featured three rounds of play, with $25,000 donated to the V Foundation for Cancer Research on behalf of the trio that finishes first in the overall competition. This collaboration is good news for “Apex Legends,” who has seen its player base gradually decrease; meanwhile, it allows ESPN to increase its fan base without losing previous consumers.
Megan Rapinoe fuses politics, pay, and tech in Women’s World Cup win. By opening the scoring in the final game of the tournament with a penalty awarded after a video review, Rapinoe claimed a sixth goal and finished as the Golden Boot winner of the most-watched FIFA women’s tournament. Online, things between the White House and Rapinoe escalated as she rejected a post-tournament visit to the epicenter of the United States with President Trump later tweeting, “Megan should WIN first before she TALKS!” and “Finish the job!” According to the Associated Press, Rapinoe has been an outspoken advocate of equal pay for women in soccer. This World Cup victory gave the Americans a $4 million pot, double what it was four years ago. Yet the differences between men’s and women’s payouts are staggering as the prize money for the men’s World Cup in 2022 is jumping to $440 million while the women’s teams will only split $60 million in 2023. Long term, it will be on FIFA to drive more business into women’s soccer as the lack of sellout crowds and public interest currently make it difficult to deliver the same returns to world-class female soccer stars.
MLS-Liga MX Leagues Cup confirms domestic rights deals for new North American soccer tournament. According to SportsPro, ESPN and Univision have secured U.S. rights to the inaugural Leagues Cup, the new continental club soccer competition featuring eight teams from MLS and Liga MX, North America’s two powerhouse leagues. ESPN will host U.S. English-language coverage across both its linear and over-the-top channels throughout the seven-match tournament, which kicks off July 23. ESPN+ will stream three quarter-final matches including Chicago Fire v Cruz Azul on the opening day, as well as Houston Dynamo v Club America, and Real Salt Lake v Tigres UANL on July 24. This is a bold move to further the passion for soccer in North America; a move that will prove fruitful in the long run for MLS, which sees some of the youngest average fan ages when compared to other major North American sports leagues.
On the heels of the Women’s World Cup, National Women’s Soccer League pro women’s soccer league is back on TV. With the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals between Team USA vs. the Netherlands showcasing a higher American rating than the men’s World Cup last year, ESPN has inked a deal with NSWL to televise 14 matches during the remainder of the current season. A total of 55 players on Women’s World Cup rosters play in the nine-team NWSL, including U.S. stars Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Carli Lloyd, Tobin Heath, and Lindsey Horan. According to Deadline, the broadcast deal comes after Lifetime and A&E Networks in February left a three-year official sponsor and broadcast partner deal a year early, leaving the league without a TV home less than two months before the start of its season. All ESPN NSWL league broadcasts will also stream live on the ESPN app. Women’s soccer may be looking at larger sponsorships in the near future as ESPN is jumping in to take advantage of the recent surge of interest in the sport.
Power of Sports Five
Pete Alonso to donate part of $1 million Home Run Derby winnings to charity. The Mets’ rookie slugger upset rookie slugger Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays – who set a Home Run Derby record with 91 total home runs – to take home the winning prize of $1 million. The sum nearly doubled his $550,000 salary, but he still plans on giving some of his prize to help those in need. According to Fox Business, Alonso has pledged 5% to the Wounded Warriors Project, which aids military veterans, and 5% to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, which raises money for families of first responders. After the Home Run Derby, Alonso said the donations were motivated in part by both of his grandfathers serving in the U.S. military; each donation totaled $50,000. Rookies seem to have made MLB exciting again, and Alonso is setting a strong precedent for philanthropy with the young superstars of the game.
T-Mobile and MLB All Star Week come together for #HatsOff4Heroes. The telecom giant is donating $250,000 to Little League Baseball and Softball -- a sum that swelled significantly due to the record-shattering home run total. T-Mobile has been an official MLB partner since 2013, and in 2016 became title sponsor for the T-Mobile Home Run Derby during All-Star Game week. According to Tullahoma News, this year the company added an additional $1,000 per home run and $5,000 per magenta bonus ball home run, which resulted in roughly $600,000 for charity after 312 total home runs. Funds raised will help make local Little League programs more affordable for kids and families around the country through equipment grants and financial assistance. This comes on top of the $100,000 T-Mobile and CEO John Legere donated in April to support local leagues rebuilding in Puerto Rico. Even amidst the middle of a merger with Sprint, T-Mobile is still making a difference in the lives of young athletes.
The ESPYS auction benefiting the V Foundation for Cancer Research returned for its 15th year. In its 15th year, the V Foundation is supported by eBay auctioning to donate funds toward cancer research.  According to PR Newswire, fans had the chance to bid on everything from exclusive meet and greets with celebrities, athletes, coaches, and league executives as well as behind-the-scenes opportunities with ESPN on-air personalities. The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, legendary North Carolina State basketball coach and ESPN commentator. Since 1993, the foundation has funded more than $225 million in cancer research grants nationwide. Overall, nearly $912 million has been raised for charity by the eBay community, and the program is on-track to raise $1 billion by 2020. The ESPYS always highlight that it's what happens off the sports field that really matters for athletes, coaches, and fans.
NASCAR raises $260,000 for kids over its racing weekend. Charitable programs combined to raise more than $269,000 for local youth groups during last month’s NASCAR Cup Series weekend at Sonoma Raceway. According to the Sonoma Index-Tribune, the majority of the proceeds raised during the race weekend benefit Sonoma County youth organizations through the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities. Raceway officials say the charity has distributed more than $6.4 million to youth-serving nonprofit groups since 2001. The money came in principally through the banquet and live auction, which raised $259,000, a record high. Additionally, more than $6,000 was raised through various donations during the weekend. In 2017, Speedway Children's Charities distributed nearly $3.2 million in grants to more than 435 different charitable organizations across the U.S. as NASCAR continues to rebrand itself for a younger generation.
The Eagles’ Chris Long, NHL, and Chicago Fire Soccer Club were among the winners at ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards. According to The Wrap, the Fifth Annual ESPN Sports Humanitarian Awards once again celebrated athletes and charity ahead of the ESPYS. The most coveted award of the night was the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award, which this year went to former Philadelphia Eagles defensive end and founder of Waterboys.ORG, Chris Long. Long topped finalists Reggie Bullock of the Los Angeles Lakers, former U.S. Open tennis champion Sloane Stephens, and Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals. Additionally, the NHL was the League Humanitarian Leadership Award winner, and the Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year winner was the Chicago Fire. In addition to honoring sports stars who make a difference, the proceeds from the night went towards the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund at the V Foundation, which has contributed $7.5 million to the community on behalf of the Sports Humanitarian Awards.

Women's World Cup 2019: USA beat Netherlands to win fourth title

Rapinoe gives USA lead from penalty spot after VAR review
The United States won the Women’s World Cup for a record fourth time as they eventually overpowered the Netherlands in Lyon.
Megan Rapinoe’s penalty and Rose Lavelle’s fine run and finish gave the defending champions victory in the second half, after resilient first-half defending from the Dutch.
Veteran winger Rapinoe’s calmly-slotted opener came from a spot-kick awarded after a video assistant referee (VAR) review, at the end of a tournament in which the system has been a major talking point.
Barcelona defender Stefanie van der Gragt’s high boot caught USA striker Alex Morgan and French referee Stephanie Frappart pointed to the spot after assessing replays, and the holders did not look back after taking the lead.
The European champions, reaching the final in only their second World Cup, kept the favourites at bay in the first half as former Arsenal goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal produced four excellent saves.
But the USA, playing in their third consecutive final, continued their reign as the world’s finest side as they added to their titles of 1991, 1999 and 2015.
Rapinoe’s goal also meant she won the Golden Boot after finishing with six goals and three assists, while she also took the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player.
Reaction as the USA beat Netherlands to win the World Cup
Rate the players from the final
Peerless USA’s dominance continues
The USA secured their fourth Women’s World Cup title (1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019), twice as many as any other nation
Victory for the USA saw their English-born boss Jill Ellis, from Hampshire, become the first coach to lift the trophy twice.
Her side’s second consecutive world title was a hard-fought one, but they have been the best side in a 24-team tournament that was fiercely contested, despite facing more serious trophy contenders than four years ago.
They laid down a daunting marker in their first match of the competition as they cruised to a 13-0 win over Thailand – the biggest-ever victory at the finals.
Comfortable successes over Chile and Sweden followed, before they faced three much more detailed tests of their title credentials in the knockout rounds but battled to a trio of 2-1 wins over Spain, hosts France and England.

Rose Lavelle scores a fabulous goal to make it 2-0 to the USA
In 2015’s final in Canada, the USA took a 4-0 lead over Japan inside 16 minutes, as a Carli Lloyd hat-trick helped them win 5-2, but the Dutch posed a far stiffer test.
Sarina Wiegman’s side, who beat Sweden in the last four on Wednesday, did well to absorb pressure from the USA in the first half and counter attack with pace when they could.
However, the Oranje created very few clear chances over the 90 minutes and winger Tobin Heath spurned multiple opportunities to extend the USA’s lead late on.
Champions making headlines on and off the pitch
The Stars and Stripes became only the second nation to successfully defend a Women’s World Cup title, after Germany did so in 2007.
But their outstanding squad of players have generated headlines off the field as well as on it during an absorbing 52-match tournament in France.
Rapinoe, who scored twice in their last-16 tie and did so again in the quarter-final, made front-page news during the tournament by saying she would reject a hypothetical invitation to the White House, for which she was criticised by US President Donald Trump.
Ellis’s team were sometimes accused of being arrogant – and even branded disrespectful when striker Morgan celebrated her semi-final goal against England by pretending to sip a cup of tea – but their confidence has ultimately been fully justified by their impressive defence of their title.

Morgan defends goal celebration against England
Their 2-0 win in front of a capacity crowd of 57,900 at the Stade de Lyon saw them lift the title in Europe for the first time, after triumphs in China, on home soil and in Canada.
Scoring 26 goals over their seven matches in France, they set a new record for a single World Cup campaign, while 34-year-old Rapinoe became the oldest player to score in a final.
Her penalty took her narrowly above team-mate Morgan and England’s Ellen White to win the Golden Boot award.
That came after Van Veenendaal had kept the USA at bay in a frenetic spell towards the end of the first half, first saving from Julie Ertz’s powerful strike – the final’s first shot on target after 28 minutes – before denying Samantha Mewis and keeping out two Morgan efforts, the first of which hit the post.
Player of the match – Megan Rapinoe
Repinoe was calmness personified taking the crucial penalty to send USA on their way to victory. She also won the Golden Ball, awarded to the best player of the tournament
‘They’ve made history’ – what they said
United States boss Jill Ellis, speaking to BBC Sport:“This is an amazing group of players – they showed fantastic resilience.
“They put their hearts and souls into this journey, I cannot thank them enough. I could barely speak immediately after the game but I told them they had made history and to enjoy it.”
USA co-captain Megan Rapinoe:“It’s unbelievable just to know all of the people in our group have put in so much work. We have all our friends and family here, it is surreal.”
USA’s record-breaking run – the stats
USA attacker Megan Rapinoe is the second player in history to start three Women’s World Cup finals (2011, 2015, 2019) after Germany’s Birgit Prinz (1995, 2003, 2007).
The USA scored 26 goals at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, the most by a team at a single tournament in the competition’s history.
Rapinoe became the first player to score a penalty in a Women’s World Cup final, as well as being the oldest scorer in a final (34 years and two days).
This was a 12th consecutive victory at the Women’s World Cup for the USA – the longest run in World Cup history (men’s and women’s).
Netherlands goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal made eight saves in this match – the most by a goalkeeper in a knockout stage match at the 2019 Women’s World Cup.
Since failing against Australia in July 2017, the USA have scored in 45 consecutive matches in all competitions, netting 148 goals and scoring at least twice in each of their past 12 games.

Match Kei nishikori – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be held may 29 at 12:00 GMT in the second round of Roland Garros. What factor can make a bet on the game Kay Nishikori vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
Kei Nishikori
Nishikori came to Roland Garros for the seventh racket of the world, but it should be said that this year the tennis player is not too bright.
At the start of the season, Kay was the winner of the tournament in Brisbane, and then further reached the quarterfinals only to Barcelona, where at the stage of ½ finals were weak Daniil Medvedev of Russia (4-6 6-3 5-7).
Also we will remind that on the eve of the masters in Madrid and Rome , the representative of Japan, respectively, in the 1/8 finals and the quarterfinals were lost to Swiss Stan Wawrinka (3-6 6-7) and Diego Sebastian Schwartzman from Argentina (4-6 2-6).

Bet on match Kei nishikori – Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Kei nishikori this year on clay is quite hard, and most of his previous meetings took place in the struggle. At the same time Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for results on this surface also not too convincing. Of course, note that in the first round of the Vic to the representative of Japan went easier, but the opponent he was objectively weak. Now match need to expect hard enough, and it is likely that all three sets here will not end.

10 young stars who could be on the move during the summer window
The summer transfer window is nearly open and clubs right across Europe are poised to strengthen or trim back their squads.
Those with long-term visions will seek to draft in some of the talented youngsters emerging around the continent.
We look at 10 players aged 21 or under who could be on the move over the continent
Matthijs de Ligt
19, Ajax, central defender
Almost certainly the hottest property in European football right now, De Ligt has shown maturity well beyond his years in Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals.
The 19-year-old won the prestigious Golden Boy award back in December and has not only been inspired Ajax but formed a formidable central defensive pairing alongside Virgil van Dijk in the Holland side.
Barcelona are poised to become the next beneficiaries of De Ligt's class with his salary reportedly agreed, though the three-month suspension handed to his agent Mino Raiola could delay matters.
Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt celebrates following their victory over Utrecht last weekend
Houssem Aouar
20, Lyon, midfielder
If a certain Pep Guardiola describes you as 'incredible', waxing lyrical on your 'excellent technical quality', then you must do something
That was versatile France under-21 midfielder Aouar after he impressed for Lyon against Manchester City in the Champions League group stage.
Indeed, he must have caught City's eye as he has been linked with a summer move there, with Liverpool also. [1 9459005]
Lyon's Houssem Aouar caught the eye of Pep Guardiola and could be on his way to Man City
Joao Felix
19, Benfica, attacking midfielder
There's so much buzz around Portuguese whizz kid Felix – considered in some quarters as Cristiano Ronaldo's apparent – it's almost deafening.
Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester City are just four of the European heavyweights with a paddle at the Felix auction, with the bidding starting at £ 105m
What amusing is that the teenager came to Benfica from rivals Porto aged 1 5 after they decided he was too small and too skinny. A costly mistake.
Benfica's prodigy Joao Felix is valued at £ 105m and is wanted by most of Europe's elite
Alexis Claude-Maurice
20, Lorient, attacking midfielder
Having unearthed a gem from the French Ligue 2 club Lorient in the form or Matteo Guendouzi last summer, Arsenal may well return for exciting playmaker Claude-Maurice.
He has scored 14 goals in France's second division this season and could easily prove a snip with Lorient demanding around € 10m for him.
But Arsenal could face competition from Borussia Monchengladbach, Monaco and Eintra Frankfurt, who could well offer 20-year-old Claude-Maurice more game time.

Luka Jovic
21, Eintracht Frankfurt, striker
With 17 goals in the Bundesliga and 10 in the Europa League, breakthrough seasons don't come much more prolific than the one enjoyed by Jovic.
The Serbia striker represents exceptional business by Eintracht Frankfurt, who activated a € 7m release clause in Jovic's loan deal from Benfica to sign him permanently last month.
They are now likely to sell him for at least 10 times that amount with the likes o f Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Manchester City forming a not-so-orderly queue.
Striker Luka Jovic has enjoyed an exceptional breakthrough year with Eintracht Frankfurt
Nikola Milenkovic
21, Fiorentina, center-back
Just 21, Serbian international Milenkovic has been a first-team regular at Fiorentina for two seasons and can operate at center-back and full-
Given that, it's little surprise Manchester United have been linked with him as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans a complete overhaul of just about everything this summer.
But competition for the 6ft 5in giant could come in the form of Atletico Madrid , who have identified Milenkovic as Diego Godin's successor.
Nikola Milenkovic celebrates scoring for Fiorentina against Juventus in a recent game in Turin
Ismaila Sarr
21, Rennes, winger
It's a stellar campaign for the Senegal winger this season with 12 goals and 11 assists for Rennes, who shocked heavily-fancied Paris Saint-Germain to win the French Cup last month.
Sarr caught the eye of Arsenal manager Unai Emery during their hard-fought Europe League last-16 tie and the Gunners have reportedly been in touch.
But they are set to face competitions from Leicester City, Roma and AC Milan for a player valued at around £ 25m.
Senegalese star Ismaila Sarr has been linked with a Premier League or Series A move
Xavier Mbuyamba
17, MVV Maastricht, defender
Being tagged 'the next Virgil van Dijk' does have a tendency to heap unnecessary pressure on such a young
But there is no question that Mbuyamba, who plays for Dutch club MVV Maastricht, has caught the attention of a number of leading European clubs.
The teenager is currently on loan at Chelsea, but is attracting interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Porto.
Xavier Mbuyamba (left), or Dutch side MVV, has been labeled 'the next Virgil van Dijk'
Gedson Fernandes
20, Benfica, central midfielder
There is something remarkable about Benfica's production line and another who has risen to prominence there is midfielder Fernandes.
Promoted from the B team to the senior side last summer, the 20-year-old has sampled regular league football and also the Champions League for the first time.
Tottenham have reportedly just joined a queue of suitors for the £ 35m-rated man that also contains Manchester United and Liverpool.
Gedson Fernandes is yet another talented player emerging from Benfica's impressive academy
Samuel Chukwueze
19, Villarreal, winger
It's a bittersweet season for Barcelona, with domestic success counter-balanced in the Champions League semi-finals.
One of these undoubted flops has been Philippe Coutinho and he could well be on the move, with Villarreal's 19-year-old starlet Chukwueze touted as a possible replacement.
The Nigerian has a € 60m release clause in his contract and not only has a season or La Liga exp erience under his belt but has been capped at senior level for his country.
Samuel Chukwueze has been touted as a potential replacement for Philippe Coutinho at Barca

Champions League 2018/19 Tactical Analysis: Barcelona vs Lyon
bestfreebettingtips.com @bestfreebettingtips
The Champions League is finally back and all is once again well with the world. European football has been gone for far too long to count, and that is exactly why Tuesday’s result might sting a bit more than we would like it to.
Olympique Lyonnais hosted Barcelona at their Groupama Stadium in a clash of two extremely attack-minded teams as goals galore were expected. But as is the case so often, what is on paper rarely reflects what actually transpires on the pitch with both the French and the Catalan teams failing to rattle each other’s nets.
The visitors will however be the more disappointed ones, or at least they should be,. They had control over most of the proceedings in France while the home team will undoubtedly settle for this goalless draw and take their chances at the Camp Nou in a couple of weeks’ time.
This tactical analysis will use statistics to dissect the game that promised much but delivered very little in terms of the scoreline, and determine who were the actual victors of a rather uninspiring draw.
Lineups
Barcelona (4-3-3)
Starting XI: ter Stegen – Semedo, Pique, Lenglet, Alba – Sergi, Busquets, Rakitić – Messi, Suarez, Dembele
Bench: Iñaki Peña, Murillo, Umtiti, Vidal, Aleñá, Coutinho, Malcom
Coach: Ernesto Valverde
Lyon (4-2-3-1)
Starting XI: Lopes – Dubois, Marcelo, Denayer, Mendy – NDombele, Aouar – Traore, Memphis, Terrier, M. Dembele
Bench: Gorgelin, Tete, Marçal, Solet, Tousart, Cheikh, Cornet
Coach: Bruno Genesio
Barcelona’s setup
Life has not been kind on the Catalan giant as the troubles of their damned February continue. Ernesto Valverde’s team is finally (mostly) injury-free but be it exhaustion, a rough patch of fixtures or something else, they are experiencing a slight dip in form.
Playing away from home on a big Champions League night, the Ant decided to draw the cards from the safe side of his deck and opt for balance instead of chaos. Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s position was never in doubt, and neither were the ones of Jordi Alba, Clement Lenglet and Gerard Pique respectively.
The position up in the air, as per usual, was that of the right-back. In the end, it was given to Nelson Semedo over Sergi Roberto. The Spaniard, however, was also on the field but playing a bit higher up as a right midfielder, next to Sergio Busquets and Ivan Rakitić. The front three was a largely expected one, comprising of the all too familiar trident of Ousmane Dembele, Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.
The team operated in a 4-3-3 system on paper, but on the field it turned into a diamond-like shape of a vintage Ernesto Valverde 4-4-2 formation.
Lyon’s setup
Bruno Genesio and his troops were also locked and loaded for one of the biggest, if not the biggest, clash of their current campaign. Lyon boast one of the most talented young squads in Europe, relying on quick attacking football and some beautiful transition play.
With an average squad age of just 24, the French team is an exciting prospect in world football, and their stalemate with Barcelona proves that point. Genesio had enough luck and wit to have most of his players ready for the Catalans.
The only missing link was Nabil Fekir who had to sit this big clash out and watch from the stands because of his yellow-card suspension. Ferland Mendy, his left-back, also gave his coach a bit of a scare during the warm-up when he supposedly injured himself, but managed to play anyway in the end.
The rest of the squad was fit and ready and the only change, apart from Mendy being rested in Ligue 1 against Guingamp, was Tanguy Ndombele returning to the lineup, and Lucas Tousart dropping to the bench. Moussa Dembele led the attack, followed by Terrier, Memphis Depay and Traore.
Genesio decided to field his troops in a 4-2-3-1 system that switched to a more compact 4-5-1 in the second half of the match in France.
An electric start to the game
Just as previewed by almost everyone before the game, the battle of two extremely attacking sides resulted in a high tempo clash with almost non-stop action while both were fit enough to endure it. Barcelona and Lyon had a similar strategy of exploiting their opponent’s weaknesses but had somewhat different approaches to those plans.
Barcelona’s choice of personnel was the first focal point of Ernesto Valverde’s strategy. The fact that both Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto started the game meant that the Basque coach was going for a contained and controlled match with the Blaugrana setting the tempo and pulling the strings.
Barcelona’s pass network shows the players’ average positions and the core difference between their two respective flanks.
Notice in the pass network above how differently positioned Barcelona’s flanks are. This tells us two things: the left was the attacking side with both Jordi Alba and Ousmane Dembele positioned higher up the pitch, while the right was there to hold the potentially more dangerous side when it came to Lyon’s counter-attacking capabilities.
Roberto and Semedo’s task was mainly to defend, so Barcelona’s right side was never really an attacking threat, although it could have been with the attacking potential of both players occupying that position.
Notice how differently the left and the right wings are positioned: Dembele/Alba are high up the pitch as an attacking outlet, while Roberto/Semedo are more defensively oriented, leaving a lot of free space unoccupied in front of them.
The above example clearly shows how that looked like in real life on the pitch. Jordi Alba and Ousmane Dembele combined fairly well to cause some serious danger for Lyon. The Spaniard overlapped constantly and, in truth, spent more time as a left midfielder or even as a winger than a left-back.
As predicted, the Frenchman occupied that left half-space to get the most out of Alba and his attacking contributions to the team. But look how empty that right side looks when Barcelona are building the attack.
Lionel Messi would also drift inside and drop significantly deeper than his actual position on paper, leaving the flank open for someone else. The problem was that there was no one to take it. Both Roberto and Semedo were restrained and focused on defending more than attacking.
Still, that was all a part of Ernesto Valverde’s plan as the duo would often be accompanied by Sergio Busquets in order to nullify Lyon’s left wing and their transitions.
Lyon were still adamant on using their left to attack but were met with enough numbers to cover for it. Notice how both Roberto and Semedo are highly active defensively, and cover each other very well. This was excellent when having to prevent a swift counter but offered very little going the other way.
Knowing that the French team had the potential to hurt them in transitions, Valverde doubled his efforts to stop it, literally putting two to three men there to stop the bleeding. Sergio Busquets was also often seen pressing and blocking Lyon’s chances of a quick one-two that they so often use to make a quick break.
Notice how both Roberto and Semedo do not venture that high up the pitch and are ready to fall back in case of a swift Lyon counter.
Similar ideas and similar outcomes
Both Lyon and Barcelona are known for their tendencies to press, and above all, press well and calculated. The hosts also knew that just by pushing up the pitch, they wouldn’t do much because they were dealing with Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The German’s exceptional footwork enables Barcelona to effectively get rid of all and any pressure by simply sending the ball over to a free man higher up the park. Knowing this would be the case, Genesio instructed his team to press up to the back line and shut down the passing channels instead of pressing the man between the sticks himself.
Lyon pressed in a well-organised manner, blocking all channel for Marc-Andre ter Stegen to exploit with his long balls rather than pushing all the way to the German keeper.
When everyone was well marked, ter Stegen’s long balls were met with less success than would have been the case had they not pressed well. Lyon’s ability to win their aerial duels was also important in this aspect and served them well with a 52.17% success rate (12/23).
On the other side of the pitch, Barcelona had a similar tactic in mind but with a different end result planned. They also pressed well and pressed high with numbers, starting with the front three who were supported by the midfield trident.
Barcelona, on the other hand, deployed their high press with numbers and intensity, often resulting in lost balls by Lyon.
Notice how Luis Suarez is already on the move as he expects that their press will send Lyon backward. He expects either that or a lost ball which would mean that he would be one step ahead of the curve by positioning himself just at the right spot.
The press starts with Messi and Roberto but is supported by Ivan Rakitić, Sergio Busquets and Ousmane Dembele just a bit behind. Roberto was crucial in this part because his tank could last the longest which meant constant movement on the right.
Lyon’s losses on the night. Note that far too many happened in their own half, and in danger zones.
Lyon’s losses can be seen in the image above. Notice how the majority of them happened in their own half, which was a direct result of Barcelona’s press. The fact that they lost the ball a total of 99 times throughout the game was also a big problem for the French team, and a big boost for the Catalans.
Ndombele was one of their key figures on the pitch but Valverde knew that would be the case as the young midfielder is already getting a lot of attention by some of Europe’s best. With this in mind, he made a specific plan for him.
Even though a midfield trio of Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitić and Sergi Roberto is a predominantly defensive one, it is also a one that utilises the pressing game extremely well. Busquets was crucial in this regard.
Sergio Busquets was instrumental for Barcelona, regaining possession and disrupting Lyon’s passing channels and connections between the thirds.
Barcelona’s pivot disrupted Lyon’s passing lanes and more importantly, shut down Ndombele’s chances of getting the ball forward with his usual sharpness. Consequently, there was such a high number of misplaced passes from the Frenchman (14).
Another example of Sergio Busquets cutting Lyon off
Apart from cutting Lyon off (three interceptions and 14 recoveries, seven in the opposition’s half), Busquets also created space for his teammates, as well as denying it for the opponents. By stretching both Houssem Aouar and Tanguy Ndombele, he created pockets of space for his teammates to exploit, especially Messi, who was usually tightly man-marked, as can be seen below.
As the obvious danger-man, Lionel Messi was often caught in a web of three to four players. But Lyon were not consistent in their pressing.
Lyon exposed
For all their defensive prowess, Lyon were exposed far too many times on the night, and only sloppy finishing saved them from conceding a crucial away goal in front of their fans. Their main problem was the misuse of their numerical superiority.
Admittedly they overcrowded the midfield on more than just one occasion, especially in the second half with the formation change. The fact remained that their marking and press in their own half was not good enough. Let’s examine some of the chances they let slip through.
Lyon fail to press effectively, which results in Barcelona’s midfield being free of markers and ready to receive the ball.
Notice above how Barcelona’s midfield has too much freedom, and they are not being covered or press properly. Both Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto are free to receive the ball and move it forward or toward the wings.
Just a couple of seconds later, Messi shifts the ball to the other side, and the pieces start moving again. But the same thing keeps happening for Lyon: they move as the ball moves, but keep forgetting their counterparts along the way.
…and once again here.
Once again, the midfield is free to receive the ball with no obstructions as Messi is found with ease, which should never, ever be the case when playing against Barcelona. The same goes for Ousmane Dembele, who was given tremendous freedom on multiple occasions. Luckily for the French team, none were taken by the Catalans.
In both cases Dembele is left totally unmarked, despite being among the most dangerous of Barcelona’s players.
Genesio eventually noticed that his team was leaving big gaps in midfield so he switched to a more compact block and deployed a 5-4-1 formation to compensate for their shortcomings. This resulted in a more disciplined but also tamed Lyon, who entirely stopped threatening Barcelona at one point, yielding all the possession and control of the game to the visitors.
Still, in most cases they would welcome Barcelona to their half of the pitch in a 4-4-2 shape, but would then slowly but surely shorten the distances between their own players, making the block narrower and more difficult for the ball to pass through.
Barcelona’s domination yields no results
For all their possession and a total of 25 shots on goal, Barcelona were extremely wasteful and unproductive in the final third. What started off earlier in the month seems to still be the case as the Blaugrana is having more of the same problems now, but to a larger extent than before.
While creating chances was their main bane not so long ago, finishing them is on the agenda and list of problems Ernesto Valverde has to solve.
Barcelona’s passes. Smart passes are shown on the left, and passes into the final third on the right.
Getting to the final third was not so difficult for the Catalans with 89% success in that department, but smart passes into the box and around the final third were still missing. That means that even though they had chances to get into excellent positions, the final touches were missing, both in finishing and getting that final ball to go through.
The fact was that every touch Luis Suarez made on the night was more than just lacking, but slowed the play down, and stopped Barcelona’s attacks instead of progressing them. It was a tough night for the Uruguayan, and it wasn’t the first lately. It was also another headache for Valverde to deal with, and a rather big one.
Conclusion
The clash that was supposed to rain goals in France turned into an exciting but fruitless battle of two great teams. Both showed patience as well as some outstanding football but neither was able to finish their chances, which is a shame considering the sheer quality of the match.
Still, Lyon have survived the home leg without conceding a goal, which is crucial in these knockout stages in the Champions League. The thought of going to the Camp Nou trying to book their tickets to the quarter-finals is not really a pleasant one but nobody should write them off just yet.
For Barcelona, this is already the fourth draw in February, and despite their dominance over their French counterparts, they leave Groupama stadium with more on their minds than ever before. Now it’s back to La Liga but also back to the chalkboard as the team has a lot to think about if they want to stay relevant on all fronts.

He grew to become the first player to find eight targets in his first five appearances in the Champions League – nonetheless Crimson Bull Salzburg went out in the neighborhood levels with defeat by Liverpool, despite scoring 16 targets. Handiest three teams scored more on this season’s community levels.
Haaland then joined Borussia Dortmund, and struck twice towards Paris St-Germain to attach 10 targets in seven games, four games sooner than any other player in the competition’s historical previous.
The Norway global did now not find as they went out in the 2nd leg – nonetheless he has soundless managed as many Champions League targets this season as Barcelona.
He’ll pretty most certainly elevate out as 2nd high scorer, with the modified layout that approach teams entirely enjoy a maximum of three or four fits left. The next high scorers soundless in the tournament are Bayern’s Serge Gnabry and Dries Mertens of Napoli, who enjoy six every.

‘Depressed choice’ to stage Atletico sport in March
Liverpool had been hoping to attach a Third consecutive Champions League remaining nonetheless fell to Atletico Madrid in beyond neatly-liked time in the closing 16 on 11 March.
That modified into as soon as the first time they competed in the tournament with out reaching the relaxation since 2014-15.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, Liverpool took the tie to beyond neatly-liked time at Anfield because of Georginio Wijnaldum’s plan, earlier than Roberto Firmino gave them the combination lead. An Adrian error then talented the first of three extra-time targets to Atletico, who obtained 3-2 on the evening and 4-2 on mixture.
But the sport would perchance perchance perchance also effectively scoot down in historical previous for different causes. Some 3,000 Atletico fans flew over from Madrid, despite the metropolis having virtually half of of Spain’s coronavirus instances at the time and being in partial lockdown.
That modified into as soon as the closing famous match played in England for bigger than three months. Two days later, the Champions League and Premier League had been among the many many competitions suspended.
A Sunday Instances yarn claimed 41 deaths in the Liverpool location had been linked to the sport as data gathered from hundreds of thousands of volunteers chanced on rates of instances domestically “elevated several-fold”.

Entertainers Atalanta come support from the brink
Atalanta’s choose in Valencia modified into as soon as played in the support of closed doorways – a cost of things to come support
Atalanta had been hoping to manufacture an affect in their first Champions League marketing campaign after scoring 77 targets in Serie A, bigger than any other crew, to elevate out third the earlier season.
But they looked doomed after losing their first three games – along with a 4-0 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb and 5-1 thrashing by Manchester Metropolis – and picking up one point in their fourth.
But they beat Zagreb 2-0 and Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 to become the first side to qualify for the subsequent spherical after losing their opening three fits since Newcastle United in 2002-03. They are also the first debutants to attach the knockout levels since Leicester Metropolis in 2016-17.
They confirmed why they are thought to be one of Europe’s most provocative teams – they scored 98 targets in Italy’s high flight this season – with an 8-4 mixture choose over Valencia in the closing 16.
They obtained 4-1 at the San Siro in Milan, their Champions League dwelling because their floor would now not meet Uefa requirements. Josip Ilicic then scored four targets in Spain in a 2nd leg played in the support of closed doorways – because the remainder of the tournament will doubtless be.
This modified into as soon as one more tie with huge ramifications, with the mayor of Bergamo – where Atalanta play – calling the first leg “a biological bomb” because the metropolis went on to become one of many worst-hit areas in Europe.
Ajax knocked out – despite some memorable games
Donny van de Beek’s 55th-minute plan gave Ajax a 4-1 lead at Chelsea, earlier than the London membership fought support to plan
Ajax’s speed to the brink of closing season’s Champions League remaining – earlier than Lucas Moura’s closing-gasp winner for Spurs in the semi-finals – modified into as soon as a myth for the romantics.
But they had been predictably asset-stripped by Europe’s elite, with famous person children Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt going to Barcelona and Juventus respectively.
And so they went out this season despite having a yarn (10 functions and a plan distinction of six) that would perchance perchance perchance enjoy taken them thru in five of the eight teams.
They beat Lille and Valencia 3-0 and led 4-1 at Chelsea after an hour, earlier than ending with nine males and drawing 4-4.
A dwelling defeat by Valencia in their remaining community sport intended they dropped into the Europa League, from which they enjoy since been eradicated.
German teams 17-3 London sides
Serge Gnabry grew to become the first player to find four targets in the 2nd half of of a Champions League sport when Bayern obtained 7-2 at Spurs

Gnabry’s six Champions League targets this season enjoy all are available two games – four in a 7-2 choose at Spurs and two in the three-0 first-leg choose over Chelsea.
Bayern Munich beat Spurs 3-1 in their remaining community match, with every side qualifying for the closing 16. Sadly for Spurs, they met one more German crew at that stage – with Leipzig winning 1-0 in England and 3-0 at dwelling.
Leipzig will doubtless be missing one of their goalscorers when they play Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. Timo Werner has already linked up with Chelsea, though he cannot play for his unique membership in their 2nd leg towards Bayern, or any sport this season.

Champions League semi-finals: Liverpool v Roma, Bayern Munich v Real Madrid
Liverpool were 5-1 aggregate winners over Manchester City in the quarter-finals
Liverpool will play Roma in the Champions League semi-finals, with Bayern Munich facing Real Madrid.
The Reds, who beat Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate in the last round, will host Roma on Tuesday, 24 April with the return leg on Wednesday, 2 May.
Arsenal will face Atletico Madrid in the Europa League semi-finals, while Red Bull Salzburg meet Marseille.
The Gunners will play the first leg at home on Thursday, 26 April, with the second leg a week later on 3 May.
The Europa League final will be in Lyon, France on Wednesday, 16 May, with the winner guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League.
The Champions League final will be held in Kiev, Ukraine on Saturday, 26 May.
The Salah derby?
Roma tweeted a message to their former player
Liverpool, Champions League winners in 2005, have not faced Roma in a competitive match since March 2002.
The Reds’ top scorer Mohamed Salah will face the club he left for £34m in the summer.
Roma are fourth in Serie A – 21 points behind leaders Juventus.
They staged a remarkable comeback to beat Barcelona 3-0 on Wednesday and win their quarter-final on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw.
“If anybody thinks this is the easiest draw then I cannot help this person,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
“They obviously didn’t see both games against Barcelona. In the first result, 4-1 was not how the game was – it was Lionel Messi genius against a good side of Roma.
“The second leg was outstanding, it was outstanding what they did. They should have probably won 4-0 or 5-0 – I was really impressed.
“It is just the draw and I know it is very exciting, but it is good because the most important news is we are still in the competition.”
‘One of Europe’s top clashes’
Minutes before the draw was made, Bayern announced Eintract Frankfurt boss Niko Kovac will replace Jupp Heynckes as their coach at the end of the season.
Heynckes is in his fourth spell at Bayern, with his third ending with victory in the 2013 Champions League final.
To repeat that feat, he will have to find a way to overcome defending champions Real in the semi-finals, with the German club at home in the first leg on Wednesday, 25 April and then travelling to Madrid on Tuesday, 1 May.
Real, who have won the competition in three of the past four seasons, reached the last four by coming through a dramatic second leg against Juventus.
Leading 3-0 from the first tie, Zinedine Zidane’s side were pegged back to 3-3 at the Bernabeu, before a last-gasp penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo saw them through.
Zidane has been under pressure this season though, particularly for his team’s league form, with Los Blancos fourth in La Liga and 15 points behind leaders Barcelona.
Real beat Bayern in a dramatic and controversial quarter-final last season – winning 6-3 on aggregate after scoring three goals in extra time – on their way to lifting the title.
“It’s one of European football’s top clashes. It’s the defending champions against a top side with quality players,” said Heynckes.
Arsenal handed tough draw
Arsenal won their quarter-final against CSKA Moscow 6-3 on aggregate, but were made to work in Thursday’s second leg.
Leading 4-1 from the first tie, the Gunners conceded twice in Moscow and needed late goals from Danny Welbeck and Aaron Ramsey to make progress more comfortable.
Winning the Europa League looks to be the Gunners’ most likely way of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, with Arsene Wenger’s side sixth in the Premier League and 13 points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham.
Atletico, Europa League winners in 2010 and 2012, are considered favourites to win the competition and are second in the Spanish La Liga, 11 points behind leaders Barcelona and with the best defensive record in the league.
They came through their semi-final against Sporting Lisbon 2-1, losing the second leg 1-0 in Portugal.
What are Liverpool’s chances of winning Champions League?
Data analysts at the Euro Club Index, along with Simon Gleave, head of analysis at Gracenote Sports, have simulated the remaining fixtures and given Liverpool a 60% chance of reaching the final and a 20% chance of winning the competition outright.
They rate Real and Bayern both at 50% to reach the final, but give the Spanish team the edge to win the competition with a 35% chance compared to the Bundesliga club’s 34.5%.
Arsenal are given only a 30% chance of progressing past Atletico Madrid and are at 19% to win the competition.
